Voldoende reden om hun gezelschap te zoeken; verbeeld op sieraden zijn de dieren altijd onder handbereik. Al vanaf de oudheid gebruikt de mens dieren in juwelen als decoratie en betekenisgever. Eigentijdse kunstenaars maken nog altijd dieren-sieraden, maar hun benadering is veel vrijer dan vroeger. De toegepaste technieken zijn niet langer beperkt tot metaalbewerking: dieren worden nu getekend, gehaakt, gebeeldhouwd of in glas geblazen. Sommige ontwerpers passen onbekommerd gedrukte afbeeldingen van dieren toe of verwerken speelgoed- of modelbouw-dieren. In enkele sieraden zijn zelfs delen van echte beesten gebruikt. Galerie Rob Koudijs uit Amsterdam maakte een keuze uit het verrassend grote en diverse internationale aanbod van dieren-sieraden. Hoewel bij het sieraad als kunstvorm het gebruik soms ondergeschikt is aan de beeldende of inhoudelijke kwaliteiten, zijn bijna al deze werken een groot genoegen om te dragen. Slechts een enkel, zelfstandig bedoeld object benut alleen de beeldtaal van het sieraad. De samenwerking tussen het CODA en Galerie Rob Koudijs heeft de, voor een museum, bijzondere bijkomstigheid dat veel van het getoonde werk te koop is. --------------------------------------------------- Animals can entertain, protect or comfort you; they can also hold a mirror up to your face. Sufficient reason for seeking their company. Represented on jewellery, they are always close at hand. Since antiquity men has used animals in jewels as metaphor or decoration. Contemporary jewellers still make animal-jewellery, but their intentions have become much more diverse. The technical solutions are no longer limited to working in metal: nowadays animals are drawn, crocheted, sculpted or blown in glass. Some artists carefree use printed images or apply plastic animals made for toys or model making. Even actual animalparts can be detected in some pieces. Galerie Rob Koudijs from Amsterdam made a selection from the surprisingly diverse, international supply of animal-jewellery. Though expression and content are dominant in autonomous jewellery, nearly all the pieces in the exhibition are a joy to wear. The very few pieces which are only meant as objects, still employ a jewellery-vernacular.
