17 10 2009 FrontRoom: TOBIAS ALM Summer Series 21 11 2009 Tobias Alm is een jonge kunstenaar uit Zweden die net is afgestudeerd aan Ädellab Konstfack, de sieraadopleiding van de kunstacademie in Stockholm die de laatste jaren snel opstuwt in de vaart der volkeren. Bij Tobias Alm geen gevoelige verhalen of persoonlijke ontboezemingen. Het gaat over materiaal: over het gewicht, over de klank. In de sieraden die hij maakt, verkent hij fenomenen als ritme, contrast, kleur, verbinden. Het is gelukkig geen gortdroog vorm-onderzoek: alle sieraden van Alm zijn even sculpturaal als monumentaal. Met uitsluitend materiaal als middel, streeft hij naar resultaten die ondoorgrondelijk zijn. Zijn werk betekent zowel voor de beschouwer als de drager iets tussen een uitnodiging en een provocatie. De beloning: avonturen op onverkend terrein, onverwachte schoonheid en een belofte voor de toekomst. Ward Schrijver --------------------------------------------------- Tobias Alm is a young artist from Sweden who recently graduated from Ädellab Konstfack, the jewellery-section of the art academy in Stockholm that has so flourished in recent years. Alm is not one for poignant stories or personal confessions. His jewellery is all about materials: about weight, about sound. Alm’s work explores such phenomena as rhythm, contrast, colour, connecting. But it’s no bone-dry study of form: all his pieces are as sculptural as they are monumental. From matter alone, he strives for mysteriously inscrutable results. For the wearer and the observer, his jewellery lies somewhere between an invitation and a provocation. The reward?
